Humans Can No Longer Ignore the Threat of Fungi

The recurrence of once obscure fungal diseases, particularly in places where they did not exist before, is being linked to climate change. Shifts in temperature and rainfall caused by climate change are allowing disease-causing fungi to proliferate in new environments. These changes are also contributing to the transformation of previously harmless fungi into more potent pathogens. One example is Valley fever, cases of which have increased sevenfold in the US since the turn of the 21st century.
