US lawmakers are demanding answers from the Social Security Administration (SSA) over its failure to manage billions of dollars of overpayments to beneficiaries. Many of the recipients have already spent the funds and are unable to repay the back. The SSA’s inspector general reported the total amount of uncollected overpayments at $21.6 billion in 2022. It has been suggested that the overpayments were largely due to errors made by the government.
