UK logistics company KNP Logistics, one of the country’s largest privately owned groups, declared insolvency due to a ransomware attack in June. Around 730 employees will lose their jobs, with 170 positions saved as a key entity was sold. The attack exacerbated existing financial struggles, making it impossible to secure urgent investment. KNP Logistics was a victim of the Akira ransomware gang. While a decryption tool for Akira was released by cybersecurity firm Avast in July, it’s unclear if KNP Logistics had access to it or contacted law enforcement. Ransomware attacks in the UK have surged, with concerns about underreporting.
