A draft of the preliminary recommendations for Stage 3 of meaningful use has been explored. These recommendations include the integration of more clinical decision support (CDS) and the coordination of care to meet meaningful use measures in 2016. The electronic health records will have to perform more complex functions, such as including external medication lists for drug-drug interactions. The recommendations also propose measures to improve performance on priority health conditions and to collect more extensive demographic structured data. The final Stage 3 measures will be sent to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT in May 2013. Interoperability remains a major challenge in meaningful use.
