The decongestant phenylephrine, found in many popular US over-the-counter cold and flu medications, is ineffective, according to an advisory panel to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In a 16–0 decision, the panel said phenylephrine doesn’t work when taken orally, potentially leading the FDA to remove the drug. The panel’s decision could affect many multidrug products, with Americans spending nearly $1.8bn annually on cold and allergy medicines containing phenylephrine.
