Medicare under attack: Healthcare data breaches increase fraud risks

Cybercriminals are now increasingly targeting Medicare beneficiary identification numbers, with one South Florida man recently pleading guilty to this new type of crime. Attacks on healthcare providers have reached an all-time high, with 45 million people affected by such attacks in 2021 alone, a rise of 32% compared to 2020. The theft of this healthcare data can lead to healthcare fraud and false claims for Medicare reimbursement, costing the federal government billions annually.
