The production of artificial intelligence technologies including Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s language model, GPT-4, has significantly increased water usage due to the need to cool powerful supercomputers. Microsoft’s global water consumption spiked 34% from 2021 to 2022, with the majority of the increase attributed to AI production. Google also reported a 20% growth in water use over the same period, primarily due to AI work. Both companies are reportedly working on improving the efficiency of their AI model training.
