The Medicaid program, which currently funds 4 in 10 US births, offers coverage for 60 days postpartum. New legislation, however, in the American Rescue Plan Act 2021 grants extended postpartum coverage for up to 12 months starting April 1, 2022. Meant to improve maternal health and mitigate racial disparities, this new option is available to states for five years.
