Student Applications: How an Education Software Company Exposed Millions of Files

Software provider SmarterSelect exposed 1.5 terabytes of data containing sensitive information from some 1.2 million funding applications for colleges on a public Google Cloud Storage bucket. The documents included transcripts, resumes, personal essays, tax returns and invoices, gathered as part of the application process for scholarships, grants and awards. Discovered by UpGuard, the data was secured by October 5.
