Between 2019 and 2021, a report by the Lown Institute Hospital Index found that US hospitals unnecessarily carried out coronary stent procedures every seven minutes, resulting in 229,000 unnecessary placements. The report, based on Medicare claim data, discovered a significant variance amongst hospitals, with some overusing the procedure by over 50%. The study identified Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo as having the highest rate of unnecessary procedures at 52.58%.
