A Vanderbilt University-led study has established an unexpected link between zinc deficiency, interleukin-13 (IL-13), and Acinetobacter baumannii lung infection, which often leads to ventilator-associated pneumonia. The findings suggest that anti-IL-13 antibodies could be administered to protect patients with zinc deficiency from bacterial pneumonia. The zinc-deficient mice used in the study had a higher mortality rate, which the anti-IL-13 antibody treatment was able to prevent.
