Report: tracking where stolen data travels

Cloud security company Bitglass conducted an experiment to see how stolen data is used and shared globally. They transmitted a spreadsheet of fake names, Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, and addresses, recording the viewer’s IP address, geographic location, and device type each time the file was opened. In just 12 days, the data was viewed over 1,000 times in 22 countries and five continents, with the most common access points being Russia, China, and Brazil. This highlights the importance of discovering data breaches early.
