Public health groups alarmed at White House delay of menthol cigarette ban

The Biden administration has deferred a decision on banning menthol flavored cigarettes due to pressure from critics including the tobacco industry. The delay threatens public health groups who worry the White House may indefinitely postpone or drop the rule altogether, particularly given President Biden’s forthcoming reelection bid. The initial release date for the rule was August, but it has been postponed to March 2024. The delay is viewed as compromising Black lives, as 85% of Black smokers use menthols.
