Patient data stolen in Ascension ransomware attack, but EHR restored

Ascension has made two announcements regarding the Black Basta ransomware attack that shut down its systems across 142 hospitals in early May. On June 12, Ascension revealed that attackers stole files, potentially containing patient information. The non-profit stated an employee mistakenly downloaded a malicious file, thinking it was legitimate. On June 14, Ascension announced that electronic health record privileges were restored. Notably, Ascension didn’t blame the employee and their incident response plan has been commended.
