OIG stings Virginia for failing to secure Medicaid data

A recent audit of Virginia Medicaid’s processing system revealed vulnerabilities that could have exposed Medicaid beneficiaries’ data. The Department of Medical Assistance Services failed to secure the Medicaid data in a method that met federal requirements. The report did not detail specific vulnerabilities, but the flaws were severe enough that they could have allowed a hacker to access Medicaid data or disrupt services. Virginia has agreed with recommendations to improve its security program and IT systems.
