More than 88 million people have been affected by health data breaches this year

Breaches of private health data in 2023 have affected over 88 million people, up 60% on previous years, says the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), with 77% of breaches stemming from cyberattacks. The past four years have seen a 239% increase in large breaches involving hacking reported to the HHS Office of Civil Rights. Cyberattacks are appealing targets for hackers as the value of private health information combined with the likelihood of health systems paying ransoms to regain access to their data.
