HHS Issues Proposal Bolstering Nondiscrimination Protections For People With Disabilities

US health agency HHS is proposing to amend 50-year-old regulations to better protect disabled people from discrimination in healthcare. The changes to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act include explicit bans on denial of medical treatment due to disability bias, new standards for accessible medical equipment, and prohibitions on assigning lower value to the lives of disabled people. Lack of compliance could affect the funding such healthcare providers receive from federal sources.
