Scammers are mimicking popular online tools that convert .pdf, .doc, and .jpg files, to install malware and ransomware onto users’ computers or steal personal data. The FBI’s Denver office noted an increase in such free online converters. The scammers “scrape” for information, notably social security numbers and bank account details. The FBI urges consumers to examine converter sites closely and keep virus software updated.
