Ben, a 32-year-old man with learning disabilities, was subjected to “abuse and harm” at Veilstone care home resulting in a breach of his human rights. Ben’s mistreatment involved physical restraints, restricted family visits, isolation and belongings removal. A judge approved a settlement which includes a confidential sum of money. The local authority and Health Secretary apologised for his mistreatment. A separate claim by Ben’s mother also resulted in a £10,000 settlement for breaches of her right to family life.
