US proposes cybersecurity rules to limit impact of health data leaks

The US may ask health care organisations to increase cybersecurity measures to combat cyberattacks that could leak sensitive information, as suggested by a senior White House official. The rule proposes data encryption and mandatory compliance checks on network security. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) within the Department of Health and Human Services estimates a cost of $9bn for the initial year, and $6bn p.a. over the next four years.
